Irritating ingredients stimulate the pore to produce more oil when they are applied on the skin. Stop the topical irritation and that aspect of causing oil production is stopped. (The systemic cause of oil production isn't effected by topical application of skin care products or acne medications.)

Regarding the products containing irritating ingredients, if they stimulate the pore to make more oil than you had before, is there any way to counteract that if you have used them in the past?

For a serious medical condition it would be really inappropriate for me to second guess a physician.

Can't wait to see the 3rd edition! Any thoughts on Retin-A and its derivatives for those with overactive autoimmune systems? My dr.s won't let me near these...sigh.

I too fell for every gimmick in skincare - Bonne Bell 10-0-6 Lotion, Seabreeze toners, srubs, Snap, Oil of Olay, etc. I became a fan with your very first book, and use sunscreen 365 days a year - even my family doctor was surprised at the time (early 1980's). Gentle is my mantra today. I work in the cosmetic industry and can't believe all the crap that is sold to women these days. As a consultant I try to determine what my customers need, not what my manager thinks I should be selling. Keep up the excellent work!

Thanks Paula. I agree with David. I, too, used to torture my skin with Ivory bar soap, that famous walnut scrub, Noxema and straight alcohol. I wondered why it was red, tight and still broken out when I had scrubbed it so hard and killed every single germ! I'm so glad I'm armed with new information 25 years later to use with my daughter.

Thanks to your books Paula, I've known for years to avoid all the irritating junk typically found in "acne" products. Once I learned how to clean and treat my skin (gently, rather than torturing it with alcohol and other stinging, drying, burning stuff) the breakouts diminished dramatically. I can't wait for your new book.
