If paulas choice product are really good and superior to other brand (as what she says) why is it that reviews in makeup alley (based on true people experience) are generally average? I have used lots of products from paulas choice but i jsut dont get it. It doesnt even work! Irritant laden products such as chanel toners for mattifying works for me, but accdg to paula it is irritant laden, how is this so?

I'm currently writing an email to a Cosmetics Association about a product they provide (free) to particpants in their sponsored Look Good Feel Better makeup workshops for women with cancer.

They donate products to the workshops which are then given to workshop participants. They get to take home a cleanser/toner/moisturiser routine plus a bunch of makeup which is wonderful, but I fear the toner is only hurting - not helping - the skin of these women, many of whom are undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment and are probably more at risk of irritation in their situation.

Perhaps they've not thought the products through enough to discover that denatured alcohol is the second ingredient in the Nivea toner offered.

I'm requesting they substitute that item for a different product without alcohol, heck there's even one in the nivea range!

Will see what response I get too...

Alcohol always causes irritation on my skin when it's in a problematic concentration in a product [near the top of the ingredient list]. I have dry skin, so the reaction's immediate for me, and the same is true if I use counter-irritants on the skin, such as menthol or citrus oils.

I just avoid it completely in products.

I agree with what Bryan said: many of my friends with oily skin like the 'de-greasing' effect products with drying alcohols have on their skin, even though I've told them that repeated use is probably doing more harm than good.

Evange: Alcohol is in a lot of products because it's an inexpensive ingredient to include and, functinoally, it offers some attributes that those with oily skin prefer (quick drying time, light texture, helps penetration of other ingredients). But there are other ingredients that possess denatured alcohol's best attributes without causing undue irritation. And remember, fatty alcohols like cetyl alcohol are not the kind of alcohol we advise against using.

I must admit, the products I've used with a bit of alcohol do tend to sink in much quicker on my skin. But that being said, I'll never use a product where alcohol is one of the first three or four ingredients: experience has taught me that this makes me skin break out in red bumps and get really dehydrated. My rule of thumb: if it's 5 or more down from the top of the ingredients list, then I'll still use it. Maybe I'm wrong on the facts. It's purely what I've learnt from experience.
